Treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of the case, but most orthodontic treatment with braces spans one to three years. During this time, regular check-in appointments are needed to monitor progress and adjust the wires.

Once orthodontic treatment is complete, whether with braces or clear aligners, retainers are essential for maintaining the results. Teeth have a natural tendency to shift back toward their original positions, a process called relapse. Retainers prevent this by holding teeth in their corrected positions while the surrounding bone and tissues stabilise.

Removable retainers are typically worn full-time initially, then transitioned to nighttime wear as directed. They are easy to clean and allow for normal eating and oral hygiene routines.

Fixed (bonded) retainers are thin wires bonded to the back surfaces of the front teeth, keeping them in position without any removable appliance. They are low-maintenance for the patient, though extra care is needed when cleaning around the wire.
