What is relaxation dentistry?
Relaxation dentistry refers to the use of sedation to help anxious patients feel calm and at ease during dental procedures. At Able Family Dental, we offer intravenous (IV) sedation administered by Dr. Tyler Snow, who holds certification in moderate conscious IV sedation.
Unlike general anaesthesia, conscious sedation keeps you in a relaxed, drowsy state where you can still respond to simple prompts, but most patients feel deeply at ease and have little to no awareness of the procedure while it is happening.
For patients whose anxiety has caused them to delay or avoid dental care, IV sedation opens the door to receiving treatment in a way that feels safe and manageable.
Who is it for?
IV sedation is particularly well-suited for patients who experience any of the following:
- Significant dental anxiety or phobia that makes appointments difficult to attend
- A history of traumatic dental experiences
- Difficulty staying still or calm during procedures
- The need for multiple treatments that would be easier to complete in a single visit
- General nervousness around dental instruments, needles, or sounds
You do not need to have a diagnosed phobia to benefit from sedation dentistry. If you feel anxious about dental visits, it is worth discussing this option at your next consultation.
What to expect

Consultation and health review
Before any sedation appointment, we review your medical history, current medications, and any relevant health conditions to ensure IV sedation is appropriate for you.

Day-of preparation
You will need to fast for a period before your appointment and arrange for someone to drive you home. Our team will give you detailed instructions in advance.

IV placement and sedation onset
A small IV is placed, typically in the arm, and sedation medication is administered. It takes effect quickly, and most patients begin to feel relaxed within moments.

Treatment while sedated
Dr. Snow and the team carry out your dental treatment while you remain in a comfortable, relaxed state. You may be aware of some sounds or sensations but are unlikely to feel distressed.

Recovery and discharge
Once treatment is complete, we monitor you until the sedation has worn off enough to leave safely. A responsible adult must accompany you home, and you should plan to rest for the remainder of the day.
