IV Sedation Dentistry
Stress-Free Dental Visits with IV Sedation
IV sedation produces a deeply relaxed state that allows dental care to happen comfortably. Most patients have little or no memory of their procedure, making the entire experience far less daunting than expected.
Little to no memory of your procedure
One of the most significant benefits of IV sedation is its amnesic effect. Most patients treated under IV sedation have very limited or no memory of the procedure once the sedation wears off. For patients who dread dental visits, this means the anticipated discomfort often never registers as a lasting experience.
You arrive, you settle in, you feel relaxed, and before you know it, your treatment is complete. The procedure itself passes without the sense of time, anxiety, or tension that many patients associate with dental work.
This is not general anaesthesia. You remain conscious and can respond to simple requests. But the combination of deep relaxation and amnesia means that even lengthy or complex procedures feel, in retrospect, brief and unremarkable.
Get more done in fewer visits
Because IV sedation allows patients to tolerate longer appointments comfortably, it is often possible to complete multiple treatments in a single visit that would otherwise require several separate appointments. This is particularly beneficial for patients who:
- Have been deferring care and have several outstanding treatment needs
- Have difficulty taking multiple days off work for dental appointments
- Live further from the city and prefer fewer trips to Lethbridge
- Simply want to minimise the overall number of dental visits
Our team will plan your appointment carefully to make the most of the time available while keeping your treatment manageable and safe.
What the day looks like
On the day of your appointment, you will fast beforehand as instructed, and someone will drive you to the office. The sedation takes effect quickly once the IV is placed. During treatment you may be aware of some activity but will feel calm and relaxed. Afterward, there is a short recovery period before you are discharged into the care of your companion.
We recommend keeping the rest of that day light. Most patients feel clear-headed by evening, though individual recovery times vary slightly depending on the amount of sedation used.
You will need a driver
A responsible adult must accompany you to your appointment and drive you home afterward. This is a requirement for all IV sedation procedures. Please arrange this in advance and let us know at booking if you have questions about the logistics.
